US Patent & IP Law Firms
U.S. Location Dataset // 19,948
19,948 US patent and IP practices with a street address on 100% of rows and a phone on 99.0%, built from the USPTO's own roster of practitioners licensed to practice before it. Unlike attorneys generally, patent practitioners ARE registered federally, in one place, published in full — which is why this list can be complete in a way no compiled attorney list is. Every row carries how many registered practitioners work at that office and how they split: 29,690 patent attorneys and 7,514 patent agents across the file, with 15,719 single-practitioner shops, 1,787 with two, 1,226 with four to nine and 467 with ten or more, up to 190 at one Irvine office. The attorney/agent split is the distinction that matters in this market — an agent can prosecute an application but cannot litigate — and it tells you what kind of shop you are writing to. firmType separates the 10,502 practices whose name identifies them as a law firm from the 5,291 corporate and institutional in-house IP departments also on the roster. Coverage is all 50 states plus DC, led by California 3,733, Texas 1,777, New York 1,481, Massachusetts 1,071 and Illinois 996. Refreshed monthly.
All 19,948 records, as published — the complete set rather than a sample. That matters most for coverage and gap questions: put together the same list from partial searches and every location you miss reads as a gap that is not there, so the answer is wrong rather than merely late. Assembling the U.S.-wide coverage by hand also means one query per area against sources that cap what they return per search.

?Frequently Asked Questions
Is this all law firms, or only patent ones?
Only patent and IP. It comes from the USPTO's register of practitioners admitted to practice before it, so a general litigation or family firm is not here. That narrowness is the point: patent practice is the one slice of the profession with a complete, official, national register, so this list can be genuinely complete where a national attorney list cannot be.
What does firmType actually tell me, and how reliable is it?
It is a NAME rule, and we would rather say so than dress it up. The USPTO roster has no field distinguishing an outside firm from a corporation's in-house IP department, and both are on it. So firmType reads the organization's own name: 10,502 carry an unambiguous legal marker, 5,291 carry an unambiguous corporate or institutional one, and 4,155 are left unclassified rather than guessed at — that bucket includes well-known firms whose names settle nothing, such as Jones Day, Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati and Norton Rose Fulbright. If in-house departments are the target rather than the exclusion, that is a supported use of the column too.
What is the difference between a patent attorney and a patent agent?
Both passed the USPTO's registration examination and can prosecute patent applications. Only the attorney is also admitted to a state bar and can give legal advice, litigate, or handle trademarks and licensing. A firm staffed only by agents — 3,350 of them here — is a prosecution shop, which is a different buyer from a full-service IP firm.
Why is there no website column?
Because the USPTO roster does not publish one, and shipping an empty column would read as missing data rather than as a field the source does not have. Every column in this file is populated.
How is one office written twenty different ways handled?
By merging on the building rather than the address string. Practitioners type their own address, and one Minneapolis firm's single office appeared as "1600 TCF Tower 121 South 8th Street", "121 South 8th Street Suite 1600", "121 S. Eighth Street #1600" and seventeen more. Keyed literally, that office becomes twenty rows and the staff count is destroyed; keyed on house number and street name it is one row of 91. The same pass corrects self-reported state errors — Foley & Lardner's Milwaukee office is filed under both MI and WI — by taking the majority state at each address.
Who is missing?
14,437 practitioners on the roster list no firm and are registered at a personal address. Those are dropped rather than published under an individual's name, so a solo patent attorney working from home is not in this file. Practitioners outside the US are also excluded.
