120,179 US CPA and accounting firms with a street address on every row, a phone on 93.6% and a website on 35.5%. The column that does the work is credentialedStaff — how many CPAs the IRS places at that exact address. 103,220 firms are single-CPA practices, 8,252 have two, 2,948 have three, 4,123 have four to nine and 1,629 have ten or more, topping out at 376 in one New York office. A one-CPA practice and a forty-CPA practice buy nothing alike, and firm size is not a field a compiled list holds. `credentials` adds the mix: 3,220 of these practitioners hold a law license alongside the CPA and 2,474 are also enrolled agents. The source is the IRS's own registry of credentialed tax preparers, published monthly as a public FOIA extract, so every firm here has an IRS-verified CPA on staff rather than a self-described one. Coverage is all 50 states plus DC and the territories, led by California 14,203, Texas 10,340, Florida 8,865, New York 8,828 and New Jersey 5,020. Refreshed monthly.
All 120,179 records, as published — the complete set rather than a sample. That matters most for coverage and gap questions: put together the same list from partial searches and every location you miss reads as a gap that is not there, so the answer is wrong rather than merely late. Assembling the U.S.-wide coverage by hand also means one query per area against sources that cap what they return per search.

Is this every CPA firm in the country?
No, and nobody can honestly claim that — no register of US accounting FIRMS exists, because state boards license accountants and firms separately and publish neither in bulk. This is built from the IRS registry of credentialed tax preparers, so it covers accounting firms that prepare returns, which is the large majority of them and precisely the ones worth mailing. A firm that does audit work only, and a CPA working inside a corporation, hold no preparer credential and are absent by design.
What exactly does credentialedStaff count?
CPAs at that address, as the IRS records them — not total headcount. A 12-CPA firm with 40 staff shows 12. It is never blank and never zero: a 1 means one CPA, not missing data.
Are these firms or individual accountants?
Firms. Every row is a business at a business address, and no individual's name is ever written to the file. Where a preparer reported no trading name at all — 18,722 of them — the row is dropped rather than published under the person's name, as are the 348 who typed "Self", "Sole Proprietor" or "N/A" into the box. That line is deliberate: a list of licensed individuals is a different product with different privacy obligations, and we do not sell one.
What is the soloPractice column for?
16,737 firms trade under a single practitioner's own name — "Jane Smith CPA" — and have exactly one CPA. Those are sole proprietorships, which are still businesses, but some buyers want them and some do not, so the column lets you take either. It is set to yes or no on every row, never left blank at no.
The same firm files its name and address several different ways. How is that handled?
It is the central problem with this source, because every row is typed by hand. One New Jersey address carried five spellings of one firm. Rows are grouped by building — house number and street name, ignoring suite numbers, building names and punctuation — then by firm name within it, so an office is one row with the right staff count instead of five rows with the wrong one. Two genuinely different firms sharing a building stay two rows.
How does this compare to an accountant mailing list from a broker?
Six of the seventy-one list vendors we surveyed sell one. Theirs is compiled, priced per record, and segments on geography and firmographics. This is built from the federal credential registry and segments on how many licensed CPAs are in the office and what else they are licensed as — fields a compiler does not hold. For everyone within fifty miles, either works. For firms with ten or more CPAs, or for the attorney-CPAs, only this one answers.
