Funeral Homes & Crematories (9 States)
U.S. Location Dataset // 6,118

6,118 licensed funeral homes and crematories across Florida, New York, Michigan, Missouri, Minnesota, Kansas, Oregon, Arizona and Nevada, taken from each state's own licensing register, with a street address on every single record. These five are the states that publish their register in a usable, address-bearing form; the others either publish counts without addresses, put the roster behind a CAPTCHA, or license only individual directors rather than establishments. So this is a nine-state file covering roughly 32% of the estimated 19,000 US funeral homes, and it is named that way rather than implying national coverage. Death care is consolidating steadily, with national and regional acquirers buying independents, which makes an address-level register the starting point for anyone selling caskets, urns, cremation equipment, pre-need insurance, transport or funeral home software — or looking for acquisition targets.

CSVFormat

All 6,118 records, as published — the complete set rather than a sample. That matters most for coverage and gap questions: put together the same list from partial searches and every location you miss reads as a gap that is not there, so the answer is wrong rather than merely late. Assembling the U.S.-wide coverage by hand also means one query per area against sources that cap what they return per search.

?Frequently Asked Questions

Why only nine states?

Because only nine publish a license register that carries a street address and can be pulled in bulk. We tested and rejected several others: Texas publishes a layer holding 14% of its known funeral homes, Ohio's is 2015 commercial data rather than the register, and Colorado, Illinois and Delaware publish rosters with no address at all. Padding the file with any of those would have made the count look better and the data worse.

Is all of it equally current?

No, and this matters. Florida, Missouri, Oregon and Arizona are current. Michigan's 717 records are a 2019 state snapshot — every license in it shows a 2019 expiry — so treat Michigan as a historical list rather than a live register. Funeral homes are unusually stable businesses so most will still be trading, but the license status is seven years old. The vintage is visible in the data itself so you can drop Michigan with one filter.

Are crematories separated from funeral homes?

Yes, in the facility type column, along with cemeteries and combination operations where the state licenses them distinctly. Cremation equipment and supply vendors generally want the crematory subset rather than the whole file.
