4,381 US truck stops and travel centers, built from the chains' own locators plus a mapping sweep for the independents: Pilot and Flying J 814, Love's 732, Kwik Trip's truck-capable sites 374, TA and Petro 355, Buc-ee's 57 and Road Ranger 54, with 1,149 independents. The split matters — 3,232 are chain sites and 1,149 are independents, which is the hard part, because there is no register of truck stops and the trade association publishes no locator at all. Against an estimated 7,000 US truck stops this is roughly 63%, weighted toward the large interstate travel centers that handle most fuel volume rather than the small independent stops. Fuel networks and card issuers, telematics and routing software, food service programs, and fleet operators planning driver stops all work from this geography.
All 4,381 records, as published — the complete set rather than a sample. That matters most for coverage and gap questions: put together the same list from partial searches and every location you miss reads as a gap that is not there, so the answer is wrong rather than merely late. Assembling the U.S.-wide coverage by hand also means one query per area against sources that cap what they return per search.

Why 4,381 when there are around 7,000 truck stops?
Because the chains are enumerable and the independents largely are not — there is no register, and the trade association publishes no public locator. What we have is every major chain plus 314 independents found through mapping data. It is weighted toward the large interstate travel centers, which is also where most of the fuel volume and most of the commercial interest sits.
Does it distinguish chains from independents?
Yes, in the brand column: 3,232 chain sites and 1,149 independents. We also removed 1,280 duplicate records where mapping data listed a chain site the chain's own locator had already reported — without that step the file would have wrongly claimed 1,594 independents.
Does it carry truck parking counts and amenities?
Where the operator publishes them: parking spaces, showers, scales, diesel lanes, DEF availability and on-site restaurants. Coverage varies by chain, and we report what is published rather than estimating the rest.
