The list starts from Overture Maps place data for car washes. Taken out: 4,909 places at the same location as a site in one of our car wash chain lists; 1,873 named for a car wash chain (including Take 5, El Car Wash and Delta Sonic, which we hold no list for), a fuel or convenience-store brand, or an oil-change chain; 314 on a chain's own website; 478 rows of regional chains with 25 or more sites; 2,190 businesses that are not a car wash site (dealership service departments, detail-only shops, mobile detailers, truck, fleet and pet washes, laundromats, pressure-washing contractors); 2,455 with no street address or no wash word in the name or website; and 2,737 repeat listings of one place. Detailing shops filed as detailers are not in the file: they have no wash site. The locationsWithSameName column marks the 9,126 car washes that are the only row with their name. storeType says Express / tunnel (1,128), Full-service / hand wash (1,369), Self-serve (217) or Touchless / in-bay automatic (244) where the name says so. Phone is filled on 94.3% of rows, Facebook page on 80.2%, website on 70.2% and email on 38.4%.
The file has all 14,443 locations across 52 states in one download. Building the same list by searching one area at a time tends to miss places, and a missed place looks like a gap in coverage that is not really there.

What counts as an independent car wash here?
A car wash site that trades under its own name and is not a site of a chain. Every place at the same location as a site in one of our car wash chain lists is taken out, along with places named for a car wash chain, a fuel or convenience-store brand (a Circle K or Shell wash is part of a fuel station), places on a chain's own website, and any operator with 25 or more sites under one name.
Are detailers and mobile washes included?
No. Detail-only shops, ceramic-coating and tint studios and mobile detailers or mobile washes are taken out: they have no wash site. A business whose name says it is a car wash and also details, such as a hand wash and detail center, stays.
How do I keep only single-site car washes?
Keep the rows where locationsWithSameName is 1: 9,126 car washes. The other 5,317 rows share a name with at least one other row. A shared name is not always one owner: names such as Express Car Wash repeat across states.
Where does the data come from?
Overture Maps place data (release 2026-08-19): the car wash category, checked against our 30 car wash chain lists. Each row keeps its Overture place id, sources and last-updated date.
How current is it?
Snapshot built on October 2, 2026. It is a one-time snapshot and is not rebuilt on a schedule.
