Caterpillar sells through a small number of independent dealer companies that each operate many branch locations. This dataset covers all 694 Cat dealer locations in the United States, operated by 46 dealer organizations — the structure that makes Cat's network different from a typical retail footprint, where one dealer such as Altorfer or Thompson Machinery may run twenty or more branches across several states. Every record carries the dealer organization name and the individual branch name, so you can analyse the network either way. Records also include the product divisions each location handles (Machines, Cat Rentals, Electric Power Generation, Industrial Engines, Oil & Gas Engines, Marine Engines) and the services offered at that branch (Sales of New, Sales of Used, Rental). Why are there only 46 dealer names across 694 locations?
That is how Caterpillar's distribution actually works. Cat appoints a small number of independent dealer companies and gives each an exclusive territory, and those companies then run many branches. So the dataset has two useful name columns: the dealer organization that owns the territory, and the individual branch. If you are selling into the network, the organization is usually the decision-making unit and the branch is the delivery point.
Does this include Canada or Mexico?
No — this is the 694 United States locations only. Cat dealers in Canada and Mexico exist and we can build those, but we deliberately do not include the partial border coverage that a US-based search picks up, because a partial list is worse than no list when you are planning territory coverage. Ask us and we will run a proper Canada or Mexico sweep.
What does the productDivisions column tell me?
Which parts of Cat's catalogue a given branch actually handles. Roughly 704 of the location-division pairs are Machines, but 474 locations offer Cat Rentals, 430 handle Electric Power Generation, and smaller numbers cover Industrial, Oil & Gas and Marine engines. If you sell generator components you can filter straight to the Power Generation locations rather than mailing the whole network.
We sell aftermarket parts for heavy equipment. Is this the right list?
It is the core of it. Cat's 694 US locations plus the Bobcat, Komatsu, Volvo CE, Case CE and John Deere datasets give you essentially the whole authorized heavy-equipment dealer universe in the United States. Most parts suppliers buy several of these together — ask us for the multi-brand bundle and we will deduplicate the overlaps, since a number of dealer groups carry more than one line.
How often is the Caterpillar dealer list updated?
Weekly, from Caterpillar's own dealer locator. Heavy equipment dealer networks change slowly compared with retail, but branch openings, closures and dealer consolidation do happen and the weekly refresh captures them.
