Every licensed motor vehicle dealer in Texas, 20,839 of them, taken from the state's own licensing file with the business address, phone, license number, license class and expiry. The dealer class column separates franchised new-car stores from independents and wholesalers, and independents are 14,987 of the total — that split is the product, because an independent used-car lot and a franchised new-car dealership are completely different businesses with different buyers. Independent dealers are a deeply fragmented market with no national directory, and they are the customer base for subprime and buy-here-pay-here lending, dealer management software, floor plan finance, auction services, reconditioning and warranty products. Refreshed weekly from the state.
All 20,839 records, as published — the complete set rather than a sample. That matters most for coverage and gap questions: put together the same list from partial searches and every location you miss reads as a gap that is not there, so the answer is wrong rather than merely late. Is this the same as the state's dealer lookup?
It is the same underlying licensing data, taken from the state's bulk file rather than one lookup at a time, and normalized into a consistent schema. The lookup shows one dealer; this is all of them with the license class, address and expiry in one file.
How do I get just the independents?
Filter the dealerClass column to independent. That is the largest group in the file and the one with no other national source.
How often do these change?
Constantly. Dealer licenses turn over faster than almost any other business license, so a list bought a year ago is materially wrong. We refresh weekly from the state.
