15,729 US tax law firms with a street address on every row, a phone on 94.0% and a website on 50.9% — the highest website fill of any list we build from a federal registry. Each row carries how many IRS-credentialed attorneys practice at that address: 13,290 are single-attorney practices, 1,217 have two, 512 have three, 699 have four to nine and 165 have ten or more. The segment worth the price is in the credentials column: 3,220 of these practitioners hold a law license and a CPA license at the same time. That is a specific, high-value prospect for anyone selling practice software, professional liability cover, CPE or succession services, and no compiled attorney list can isolate it, because holding two credentials at once is not a field a compiler records. Coverage is all 50 states plus DC, led by California 1,656, New York 1,420, Illinois 1,074, Florida 1,034 and Texas 982.

## The figures

- Records: 15,729 locations
- States: 52
- Coverage: U.S.
- Fields: 20
- Price: $69 one-time, CSV download, commercial license (https://locationlists.com/license)
- File built on September 15, 2026. Not on an automatic refresh schedule.
- File last modified: 2026-09-15

The file has all 15,729 locations across 52 states in one download. Building the same list by searching one area at a time tends to miss places, and a missed place looks like a gap in coverage that is not really there.

## Questions

### Is this a list of all US attorneys?

No. It is tax attorneys, and the name says so on purpose. There is no national registry of US attorneys at all — admission is granted state by state and the large bars actively prevent enumeration. California's own search form states that a location search returns "a random sample listing of attorneys"; New York's attorney search refuses non-browser requests outright. Anyone selling you a complete national attorney list compiled one from directories. This is built from a federal credential registry instead, which is narrower and verifiable.

### What makes it a tax law firm?

At least one attorney at that address holds an IRS preparer credential, which the IRS verifies against the issuing bar. So it is not a firm that describes itself as doing tax work — it is a firm with a lawyer the IRS has confirmed is licensed and registered to prepare returns.

### Are these firms or individual lawyers?

Firms. Every row is a practice at a business address and no individual's name reaches the file. Where an attorney reported no trading name, the row is dropped rather than published under their own name — 1,800 of them. We do not sell lists of licensed individuals.

### How complete is it?

A tax attorney who prepares no returns holds no preparer credential and is absent, as is any firm where none of the lawyers do. There is no published universe of US tax law firms to measure against, so no honest completeness percentage exists. What can be said precisely is the source: 26,180 attorney-credentialed preparers in the IRS's February 2026 extract, collapsed to 15,729 firms at distinct business addresses.

### Why is this smaller than a broker's attorney list?

Because it is a different thing. Ten of the seventy-one vendors we surveyed sell an attorney list, and theirs is every lawyer they could compile. This is the tax practice specifically, verified against a federal registry, with the attorney-CPA overlap flagged. If you want volume, buy theirs. If you want to mail tax practices and know the credential is real, buy this.

### How is this data cleaned?

Every rebuild runs the same steps and counts what each one changed. For the current file, rebuilt September 15, 2026 from irs.gov: Merged 154 duplicate listings that had the same business name, street address and ZIP code, keeping every filled-in detail from both (September 15, 2026). Unified 303 city names written more than one way within the same ZIP code (for example with and without a space or an abbreviation) to the US Census Bureau spelling (September 15, 2026). Corrected 246 misspelled city names to the US Census Bureau place name for their ZIP code (September 15, 2026). Removed the second copy of 8 street addresses that were typed twice in the same field (September 15, 2026). Added map coordinates to 15,682 listings that had none, from the US Census Bureau address geocoder or, where the street address could not be matched, the centre of the ZIP code (September 15, 2026). Set the county and its federal county code on 15,682 listings, matched to the US Census Bureau county list from the county the source records, the listing's map point, or its ZIP code area (September 15, 2026). Checked every map point against the state in its address and re-placed 0 points that fell outside that state (September 15, 2026). Flagged 1,621 addresses that are incomplete, a PO box, or missing a house number, in an address quality column (September 15, 2026). Checked that the row count, state count and field completeness published for this file were measured from the file itself (September 15, 2026).

### Isn't this free on irs.gov?

The underlying records are public on irs.gov. What you pay for is the work between that public release and this file: merged 154 duplicate listings, unified 303 city spellings, corrected 246 misspelled city names, fixed 8 doubled addresses, added coordinates to 15,682 listings, added the county to 15,682 listings, flagged 1,621 incomplete addresses and measured 15,729 rows. The current file was rebuilt September 15, 2026 from irs.gov. Doing it yourself means downloading the full release, repeating each of those steps, and repeating them again every time the source updates.

### How complete is each field?

Measured on every row of the current file, the share of rows that carry each key field: phone 94%, website 51%, street address 100%, city 100%, state 100%, ZIP code 100%, latitude 100%, longitude 100%. 19 of 20 columns are filled on at least half the rows.
