# Crime & Legal Nonprofits — U.S. location dataset

All 15,224 locations in the U.S., as one CSV: 74 fields per record, 52 states, file built September 14, 2026. $149 one-time, with up to 10 real rows free before you buy.

Canonical URL: https://locationlists.com/data/crime-and-legal-nonprofits

15,224 US nonprofit organisations. Built from IRS Business Master File, the Form 990/990-EZ/990-PF e-file XML, 990-N e-postcards, the IRS auto-revocation list, IRS Publication 78, the Federal Audit Clearinghouse and the US Census geocoder. 88% carry a named officer, 43% a telephone number, 46% a website, 41% the mission statement they filed with the IRS. Every organisation carries an activity_status that was measured from both IRS filing channels — the full 990 e-file index and the 990-N postcard file — rather than inferred from registration alone. 73 columns per record.

## The figures

- Records: 15,224 locations (15,219 US)
- States: 52
- Coverage: U.S.
- Fields: 74
- Price: $149 one-time, CSV download, commercial license (https://locationlists.com/license)
- File built on September 14, 2026. Not on an automatic refresh schedule.
- File last modified: 2026-09-14

The file has all 15,224 locations across 52 states in one download. Building the same list by searching one area at a time tends to miss places, and a missed place looks like a gap in coverage that is not really there.

## Questions

### Is this the same data as GuideStar or Candid?

It comes from the same public IRS sources Candid uses — they list them on candid.org/about/our-data/data-sources. Against Candid's published Essentials API schema we match 41 of the 66 fields it returns, which is 84% of the fields reproducible from public records. What we do not have is the part organisations submit to Candid directly: board rosters, DEI demographics, Seals of Transparency, awards and photos. If you need those, Candid is the right purchase. If you need the whole file as a CSV, this is.

### Why is this so much cheaper than a Candid API subscription?

Candid sells a subscription starting at $4,800 a year. This is a one-off purchase — and you are not giving up API access to get the lower price. The same 15,224 records are available three ways: the bulk CSV, our MCP server for programmatic queries, and per-record pricing so an application or AI agent can pull just the rows it needs. What you are not paying for is an annual seat.

### Do you have an API, or only CSV downloads?

Both. Every dataset is exposed through our MCP server — search, sample, quote, buy and query — and priced per record, so you can pull a single EIN or a filtered slice without buying the file. Payment is by card or stablecoin with no account to create. The CSV is simply the cheapest route once you want more than about half the rows.

### How do I know an organisation on this list still exists?

Every row carries activity_status. “filing” means the organisation filed a 990, 990-EZ, 990-PF or 990-N postcard within the last two tax years. “revoked” means it appears on the IRS auto-revocation list with no later determination letter. Registration alone is not treated as evidence of life — 435,906 organisations in the full IRS file have no filing on record at all.

### What is missing, and can you add it?

Deep Form 990 financial detail (every line of Parts VIII–X), websites and logos for organisations that did not report one, and subject/population classification beyond the IRS NTEE code. All three are buildable — the 990 line items are in files we already hold. Choose “Custom enrichment” at checkout and we will scope it with you.

### Can an AI agent buy a slice of this instead of the whole file?

Yes. The dataset is exposed through our MCP server with per-record pricing, so an agent can query and pay for exactly the rows it needs rather than the whole download.

### How is this data cleaned?

Every rebuild runs the same steps and counts what each one changed. For the current file, rebuilt September 14, 2026 from IRS: Merged 0 duplicate listings that had the same business name, street address and ZIP code, keeping every filled-in detail from both (September 14, 2026). Unified 304 city names written more than one way within the same ZIP code (for example with and without a space or an abbreviation) to the US Census Bureau spelling (September 14, 2026). Corrected 221 misspelled city names to the US Census Bureau place name for their ZIP code (September 14, 2026). Removed the second copy of 2 street addresses that were typed twice in the same field (September 14, 2026). Added map coordinates to 3,804 listings that had none, from the US Census Bureau address geocoder or, where the street address could not be matched, the centre of the ZIP code (September 14, 2026). Set the county and its federal county code on 15,081 listings, matched to the US Census Bureau county list from the county the source records, the listing's map point, or its ZIP code area (September 14, 2026). Checked every map point against the state in its address and re-placed 0 points that fell outside that state (September 14, 2026). Flagged 3,110 addresses that are incomplete, a PO box, or missing a house number, in an address quality column (September 14, 2026). Checked that the row count, state count and field completeness published for this file were measured from the file itself (September 14, 2026).

### Isn't this free on IRS?

The underlying records are public on IRS. What you pay for is the work between that public release and this file: unified 304 city spellings, corrected 221 misspelled city names, fixed 2 doubled addresses, added coordinates to 3,804 listings, added the county to 15,081 listings, flagged 3,110 incomplete addresses and measured 15,224 rows. The current file was rebuilt September 14, 2026 from IRS. Doing it yourself means downloading the full release, repeating each of those steps, and repeating them again every time the source updates.

### How complete is each field?

Measured on every row of the current file, the share of rows that carry each key field: email 0%, phone 43%, website 46%, city 100%, state 100%, ZIP code 100%, latitude 99%, longitude 99%, revenue 39%, employee count 19%. 39 of 79 columns are filled on at least half the rows.
